Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the professional self-concept of the psychiatric mental health nurses practitioner and the efficiency of their training course through investigating the difference between the professional self-concept before and after the training course. The device used in this investigation was PSCNI, the Professional Self Concept of Nurses Instrument.
The subjects of the study were the 37 psychiatric-mental health nurses practitioner who registered for the one-year course of the training. The training was to be carried out bytwo hospitals, one in Seoul and the other in KyungGi.
The research was carried out on 9th of March 1997 and on 7th of March 1998.
The former is the date before the training began and the latter is the date after the training was finished. The collected materials were examined through arithmetic mean, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan´s SPSS/PC. multiple Range Test with the device of The results of the study are as follows:
1) The average professional self-concept of the subjects were 3.76 before they had been trained. After the training, their average has been arisen to 3.80. However it is not enough to imply any significant difference of the professional self-concept between before and after the training course.
2) There were some significance variance of self-concept in terms of age(p= .024) and rank(p=0.47). The younger group showed significantly higher score of professional self-concept than that of the older one. And the supervising nurses have had better professional self-concept than the ordinary nurses
